Shackle padlock

 

Central Europe, 18th–19th century

 

Forged, filed malleable iron. The shackle is hinged to the rectangular housing on one side. The opening for the quatrefoil-shank key is concealed under the small plate on the front. The lock opens after the latch on the short sidepiece is released.
